The Assumption School opened for instruction in September, 1910 with an enrollment of 585 students in grades 1-6.  In 1911, grade 7 opened and by September, 1912, Assumption served 700 students in grades 1-8.  The Sisters of Mercy staffed the 16 classroom building from its inception until 1984.

Today, The Assumption School offers an education program that is fully accredited by the New England Association of  Schools and Colleges.  Presently, The Assumption School consists of Pre-kindergarten (3 and 4 year olds), a full day kindergarten, and grades 1 - 8.  ACCENT (a before and after school child care program) is available to working parents.

The Assumption School provides a quality Catholic education.  In keeping with the tradition of The Assumption School, the athletic program includes boys and girls basketball teams and a cheerleading squad.  During the 1970's, 80's and 90's the basketball teams and cheerleading squads earned championships in the city grammar school league, state and New England tournaments.

The religious dimension of the school is apparent in such programs and events as the Big Brother/Big Sister program; daily prayer services, a youth choir, and student geared liturgies.  The ever present co-pastors promote strong Christian values.

Extra-curricular activities offered to the students in The Assumption School include an active student council, Cager newspaper staff, yearbook committee, peer tutoring, and library assistants.  The spiritual, intellectual, moral, physical, and social growth of The Assumption School remains the focus of its well-rounded education.  It is a Christian community that regards the curriculum as value-centered, and supports the total human realization of each person.
